In this unit, students are encouraged to wonder about the world around them.  They are encouraged to share questions and answers.  We transfer this natural inclination to ask and wonder to reading!  Through modeling and guided practice, students learn about asking questions before, during, and after reading.  In addition, they learn that not all answers are "In the Text" and therefore we must think critically.  To find the answers we must make connections, visualize, use our schema, and use outside sources (people, other texts, and other media).  Although some of the lessons do include written or drawn responses, students spend more time verbally interacting with their classmates, teacher, and texts.

As you read through the minilessons you'll notice that there aren't many book-specific lessons.  Instead, I try to focus on getting the main bones/structure of the Questioning process down, and then the knowledge we have about Questioning can be applied to any book we are reading independently, in partnerships, or in small groups throughout the year.
