Objective:

Gives students an opportunity to spell sight words or names using five different materials.

Materials:

Crayons

Markers

Highlighters

Letter Tiles - these are paper letter tiles that I purchased from Oriental Trading - - they don't carry them anymore

Letter Stamps

Stamp Pads

Glue Stick

1/2 Sheets of Copy Paper - - cut hot-dog style

Direction Sheet for visual learners

How to Introduce:

Gather students around the teaching easel.

Show students the 1/2 sheet of construction paper [drawing paper, etc].

Tell students that they are going to use the paper to create a classmate's name (or sight word) FIVE times.

Model how to number the paper from 1 to 5.

Show the class the directions sheet.

Ask them to identify the FIVE different "tools" they will use to create their classmate's name.

Model how to create the name using each tool.

As you use each tool, discuss any pertinent rules or expectations that you may have.

Allow the class time to create one classmate name.

When finished, model how to return the materials to their "homes" properly.

Put all materials into the NAMES corner (center).

Remind students that when they visit the center, they may do the activity.

Storage Ideas:

This activity is kind of tricky to store, because it won't all fit into a "laundry" basket.

In addition, some of the materials for this activity are also used by students who visit the WORDS center, too.

To store the paper, markers, highlighters, and crayons, I put them into a "laundry" basket that is clearly labeled with the activity picture and Literacy Corner name.

To store the letter stamps, I sorted all of my letter stamps by letter and put them into a hardware drawer unit that I purchased from ACE hardware (2003).

To store the letter tiles, I sorted all the tiles by letter and put them into a a hardware drawer  unit (A and B share, C and D share, and so on) that is also from ACE.

The hardware drawer units are stored on a nearby shelf (near the NAMES and WORDS corners) for easy access.
