Objective:

Students match rhyming picture pairs.

Materials:

Pocket Chart

Pointers

When to Introduce:

After students have had exposure to listening for, identifying, and creating rhymes, I introduce this task.

How to Introduce:

Gather students at the pocket chart.

Distribute 3 - 4 picture cards to each student.

I ask students to lay their cards picture side up in front of them on the floor.

I then look at the cards and call up students with the "___" card and the card that rhymes with the "___" card.

Calling one student to the front at a time, have them place their cards into the pocket chart.

We continue to do this until all cards are place.

After we finish placing all the cards, I use a pointer and model how to read the rhyming pairs of cards.

I then ask students to find 3- 4 cards and to follow me

Show the class the container/drawer/bin where the activity will be stored.

Have students place their cards into the drawer.

Remind students that when they go to the Pocket Chart Literacy Corner, they may do the activity.

Differentiating:

Have students write the rhyming word pairs.

Have students write new rhyming word pairs.

Storage Ideas:

The activity is stored in a vinyl [plastic] pencil case

I've purchased these pencil cases Target, Wal-Mart, Office Max, Office Depot, Walgreen's, etc.

The container is labeled with a sticker that indicates where the item belongs (pocket chart corner), and with a title, and picture of what the activity is.

The pencil case is then stored in it's own drawer of a Sterilite storage unit that is located on a shelf next to the pocket chart.
