When to Introduce:
How to Introduce:
Gather students around the magnet board.
Give each student a magnet letter.
Sing the ABC Song.
As each letter is sung, the student with the letter that comes next puts it on the magnet board. You may need to start the song over for the next letter. I find that this strategy is helpful for students and one they use when they complete the activity on their own or with a partner.
After all 26 letters have been placed, distribute 3-4 picture magnets to students.
Model how to identify the picture on the magnet.
Start with the letter A.
Ask for pictures that start with the (short/long) /a/ sound.
Continue this process for all letters.
When finished, use a pointer to read your work: "Rr is for rake, rug, ring, and rat. Ss is for sun, saw, seal, and sock. Tt is for tail, table, tank, and turtle."
Model how to take all the magnets down and put them into their container (HOME).
Remind students that when they visit the Magnet Corner (center) they may do the task.
Differentiating:
Have students write the words for the items under each letter they've sorted.
Storage Ideas:
The magnets are stored in a plastic 'index card' box.The box is clearly labeled with a photo of the activity and a label of the Literacy Corner to which it belongs
The the box is then stored in a "laundry" basket.
