Writing Options: Word Work

Cube Toss Words, Names, or Rimes

Objective:

Students toss the cube or cubes and record their results on the recording sheet.  The sheet can be played until it is completely filled in or in any other predetermined way.  To make this center, you will need to program the recording sheet with names, words, or rimes.  Then add an appropriately numbered die to the center, along with a pencil.  Here are several versions that I've created and tried over the years:

Dice (Cubes can be purchased from BAYER WOOD if you choose to make your own pre-programmed dice to use with the first set of docs.)

When to Introduce:

After student names have been added to the WORD WALL, Name Bottles have been made for each student, and a NAME GRAPH is created, I then introduce this activity.

How to Introduce:

Divide class into partnerships.

Give each partnership a CUBE TOSS game board.

Give each partnership a corresponding pre-programmed cube.

Model how to roll the cube, read the side of the cube facing the ceiling, and shade in the correct cell on the recording sheet.

Allow partnerships to play.

When finished, add the activity to the NAMES Corner (center).

Differentiating:

Have students write each name read.

Have students write a sentence for each name read.

Storage Ideas:

"Cube Toss" game boards are laminated (or put into sheet protectors).

The game boards and cubes are then put into a poly/plastic document envelope that is labeled with the activity picture and title.

The poly/plastic/vinyl envelope can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Target, or any other office supply store.

The envelope is stored in a "laundry" basket.
