Objective:

Students use magnet letters and sort them by category.

Materials:

Magnetic Surface

Magnetic Letters

Sorting Mats:   Round and Not Round, Tall and Short, Monkey Tail and No Monkey Tail, Uppercase and Lowercase

When to Introduce:

After students have gained a better understanding of letter names and shapes, I introduce this task.

How to Introduce:

We actually do this activity during our Writer's Workshop minilessons.

After the minilesson is done, I add the materials to the Magnet center.

Differentiating:

Have students write a list of tall, short, rounded, etc. letters.

Storage Ideas:

The magnets are stored in a plastic 'index card' box.

The box is clearly labeled with a photo of the activity and a label of the Literacy Corner to which it belongs

The the box is then stored in a "laundry" basket.
